The name Macondo is the same name as the fictitious cursed town in the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Colombian Nobel-prize winning writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Oil companies routinely assign code names to offshore prospects early in the exploration effort to helps ensure secrecy during the confidential pre-sale phases.

Gulf coast wildlife has a friend: Dan Youra is raising money for the wetlands

Washington artist, Dan Youra, is on a mission to help wildlife and residents of the Gulf coast cope with the BP oil well blowout and to donate money to wildlife causes. Dan’s blog site is BlowOutBlog.info .

Youra is an editorial cartoonist with more than 40 years experience in aiming his pen and mind at the foibles and follies of the political life of national and local leaders as well as situations. His work has appeared in university papers at University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh, Ohio State in Columbus and Evergreen College in Olympia, Washington.
