Editor’s Note: In this exclusive interview, Zev Chafets discusses his book Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One, the speculation that Rush Limbaugh will be “destroyed eventually,” Rush’s Fox News connection, and more.
ALL RIGHT MAGAZINE: Your new book is Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One, and people will be surprised about some of the biographical content therein. What would you say surprised you most about the man during the course of your studies?
ZEV CHAFETS: The thing that surprised me most was Rush’s willingness to let me into what has been a somewhat closed world. He gave me a huge amount of time, and while I doubt he spilled every secret, he never lied to me about anything, which, in my professional experience, is unusual. As far as his biography is concerned, I was impressed by the degree to which Rush’s worldview was–and remains–shaped by his father. A large part of Rush’s life has been dedicated to winning his father’s respect and approval.

As a Professor of History I can understand why most people dismiss History as boring. It is usually presented as a static jumble of dates, names and events that must be memorized, regurgitated and with luck forgotten. I have often marveled at the ability of students who can tell me how many points their favorite athlete scored in a mid-season game ten years ago or how many horsepower their favorite driver had under the hood five seasons back can’t seem to remember the relationship or the difference between the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution.
Instead of this rigid collection of repetitious minutia, History is a dynamic flow of reality that changes every day. Not only is there more of it every day, thus changed by addition, it is also open to new interpretation and comprehension every day, thus changing by multiplication and division.
In Patrick J. Buchanan’s ground breaking book Churchill, Hitler and the Unnecessary War the author presents the case that the Second World War was not precipitated by Germany’s attack upon Poland it was instead precipitated by the worthless guarantee given by Britain and France to an authoritarian Poland, which prevented it from avoiding war by returning the German city of Danzig to Germany. A move even Neville Chamberlain thought would be fair. Then when what would have been the fourth partition of Poland between Germany and the Soviet Union did occur it is forgotten by all that it was France and Britain that declared war on Germany not the reverse. No matter whether you agree or disagree with this presentation of the same facts presented in opposite order as in American History classes or not, anyone would admit at least it made you think.

President Obama promised the most transparent administration in history. He pledged all bills would be posted online for five days before he signed them. Turns out that only applied to NON-emergency bills, and everything is an emergency in our swiftly transforming America. As Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s closest adviser says, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.”
The first bill he signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which must have been an emergency since it didn’t qualify for the five day guarantee. We had to pass the pork-laden stimulus bill before the Best-Congress-Money-Can-Buy could even read it, let alone post it online, otherwise unemployment might reach the unacceptable 8% range; though most of the provisions wouldn’t kick in for months or years, but that was an emergency. Another bill too big to read is America’s Affordable Health Choices Act, which fails to insure the uninsured and doesn’t slow the rising rates, which are the two things it was supposedly designed to accomplish. And even though most of the provisions won’t overwhelm us until after the next presidential election it was an emergency. Adding insult to injury, after saying “There has never been a more open process,” Nancy Pelosi crafted the health care take-over behind doors closed so tight they’ve been called an iron curtain. Eventually she had the nerve to say “we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it…”

I would never want to sit through three hours of policy without a single jab at little Barry Marx Alinsky and his band of incorrigible, wrinkled children. I crave the brilliant, biting wit and fluid delivery of unbridled truth, whether in annunciation of the obvious or through cold, calculating satire. He’s naturally flourished with this formula through two decades of a deliberate, McCainsian death ride. But the leadfoot lefties, thrusting rabidly on a malfunctioning Toyota throttle, have altered the course of history such that Professor Fuzzball had better shift gears.
Analysis of what the bad guys are doing and how they’re doing it is indeed invaluable to a laissez faire renaissance. But we’ve reached a point of saturation. After so many hours perusing the AM dial and Channel Rupert, never mind Facebook, all the clever rants and insights get reduced to mere whining. What’s worse, the apparent light of salvation shines a full two seasons down the tunnel, as superficial November projections overshadow the more crucial spring primaries, when the country could already be won or lost.
Let’s assume this Health Control travesty gets squashed by a re-constitutionalized judiciary. Then what? If the right candidates aren’t on the fall tickets, it won’t matter if enough seats change letters to shut it down for two years to setup a super majority in 2012. While it was fun to see a group of incumbents flex their jaws at our would-be dictator, let’s keep a little perspective in acknowledging that resistance to the granddaddy of entitlement legislation doesn’t exactly warrant that much political spine.

Every day to the amazement and delight of more than 20 million people across the fruited plain, Rush Limbaugh performs his host duties flawlessly with half his brain tied behind his back. Anyone who has ever spent an objective hour listening to his program knows that Rush has a brain the size of a planet. The Corporations Once Known as the Mainstream Media assure we now have a President who is always the brightest guy in the room instead of one who didn’t have enough brains to tie his shoes.
In addition, with the exception of his Chicago handlers, casino capitalist cronies, and union dons our photogenic president is surrounded by academics eager to implement theories that worked in their labs and computer models with the American people as guinea pigs. The Cavalcade of Czars is filled with the best and brightest liberal education has produced since the Summer of Love. On the Hill Nancy Pelosi rules the House with an iron fist while Harry Reid runs the Senate with parliamentary tricks and his legendary eloquence. Together they preside over the best Congress money can buy. The question is can Alinsky’s dream team fight a war on multiple fronts with half their brain tied behind their collectivist back?

Sarah Palin made the mistake of being a self-made woman who actually accomplished things in her own right instead of riding her husband’s coattails. She worked next to her husband founding and managing a small business that continues to flourish. She was active in local school and community affairs. She ran for local office serving as a council person and eventually mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. She took on several positions in the state government. She resigned a high office to battle the insiders who had run the state for years. Elected Governor, she was soon the most popular governor in America. She accomplished all this without using a family fortune, marrying for money or buying her way into prominence. She achieved position and influence the old fashioned way; she earned it.

In this exclusive interview, Economics Professor and Rush Limbaugh guest host Walter E. Williams tackles everything from the economy to the Great Depression to “Black Economics” to the perfect gift for the Mrs. this holiday season.
ALL RIGHT MAGAZINE: In your book, Liberty Versus the Tyranny of Socialism, you wrote that American education is “in shambles.” Simultaneously there is a major push to have more and more people attend college. These students are the freshmen in your classes, so what’s the most egregious example of miseducation you have seen personally in the classroom?
WALTER E. WILLIAMS: Oh, well. I’ve seen students who cannot do simple mathematical computations, students who have very poor use of the language. Let me give you one example. Some years ago (I haven’t noticed it recently or I haven’t taught the introductory classes where I do get a lot of freshmen.) I’ve come across students writing in their bluebook. They cite something, and spell it several different ways, site, cite, sight, not being able to differentiate between the various terms. Then a lot of it is that students are many times just plain lazy. They don’t want to do the work. They expect a high grade for a mediocre performance.

Assault on Free Speech Continues
By Dr. ROBERT OWENS
Remember the promise of transparency that helped win the Presidency? All bills passing Congress would be posted for 5 days before signed. Seems the rules have changed. Apparently the pledge only applied to NON-emergency bills and everything is an emergency in the New Republic. The first bill signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was apparently an emergency. We had to pass the pork-laden stimulus bill before any of the Best-Congress-Money-Can-Buy could read it; otherwise unemployment might reach the unacceptable 8% range though most of the provisions wouldn’t kick in for months or years. The Bums-Rush is also being applied to the nationalization of medicine though the provisions of this monstrosity conveniently won’t overwhelm us until after the next presidential election.
In a direct assault against even the possibility of transparency the Chicago trained attack machine in the West Wing (Chicago’s 51st Ward) decided they have the power to decide what constitutes news. For months they’ve refused to allow anyone on Fox. This started when Chris Wallace had the bad taste to fact-check several statements made by White House officials and then the inexcusably bad taste to mention the official statements didn’t line up with the facts. This was bad enough, but Fox commentator Glenn Beck dared to expose Obama advisor Van Jones as a self-proclaimed communist and then air the Acorn prostitution sting the totally transparent Obama Whitehouse decided it was time to muzzle the only major news network not in the tank. The Obama Whitehouse declared war on Fox News.

Never since the mid 1970s when the Water Gate Congress insisted on abandoning our South Vietnamese allies after the war had been won have I seen defeat snatched from the jaws of victory in such a bold and decisive manner.
As I survey the scene in America today I’m beginning to wonder if we would be in any worse shape if we’d lost the Cold War. From sea to shining sea Americans watch as the once greatest industrial nation on earth board up our factories and ship our manufacturing capacity to other countries. It seems like every other day the last investigative journalist in America, Glenn Beck is exposing one more Marxist in President Obama’s inner circle. That big lovable fuzz-ball Rush Limbaugh is judged a racist based on manufactured quotes and lies repeated by the President’s trained peacock and the rest of the establishment media while America watches accusations of racism used to squash any criticism of Barack H*@%$*n Obama. Freedom of speech dissolves as we learn it’s profiling for some to mention the man’s middle name while at the same time school children are taught to memorize songs using his middle name extolling his Nobel sized accomplishments mmm mmm mmm.
